In my online lessons, we work on the situations you face at work, so you can join the conversation more easily and say what you mean.
I’m John Barefield, an American English teacher with a CELTA qualification and more than 30 years of teaching experience. I help working professionals, university students and secondary school students put their English to use. I also speak fluent Hungarian, so we can always talk things through if you can’t quite find the words in English yet.

What do you need English for?
Flexible online English lessons focused on speaking, one-to-one or in small groups. Preparation for IELTS, Cambridge, and Origó English exams.
English for university students
Planning an Erasmus exchange, further study abroad or an international internship? We’ll focus on the interview, presentation or language exam ahead of you. You’re welcome to bring your own materials, and we’ll agree on useful ways to practise between lessons.
English for work
Let your expertise come through in English. Whether you’re preparing for a client meeting, a technical discussion or a presentation, we’ll start with the work you actually do. You’ll practise explaining problems, answering questions and making your case. Lessons take place online at an agreed time, with no travel needed.
English for secondary school students
You know the answer, but saying it out loud is another matter. Here, you’ll have time to practise, ask questions and have another go. If you’re preparing for a language exam or the English érettségi, we’ll work on your speaking as well as the structure and accuracy of your writing. We can talk through the tricky parts in Hungarian, too.
